Yvonne Marie Zacher was born on November 4, 1949 in Pierre, SD. She was the Second of six children to Gabriel and Hazel Zacher who resided in Eagle Butte, SD. She had two sisters, Mary and Becky and three brothers, Mike, Gabriel and Joe. Yvonne or "Vonnie" as she liked to be called graduated from Eagle Butte High School and went on to Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD, getting her degree in Laboratory Technology. After graduation, she worked as a Lab and X-Ray Technician in Baker, MT, and Ekalaka, MT. Vonnie was also a novice at Immaculata Convent in Omaha, NE, for a period of time. Some of the other adventurous careers Vonnie had were working on a crab processor in Dutch Harbor, AZ, long before the "Deadliest Catch" craze. She also catered on drillings rigs back during the first oil boom. After her adventures in Alaska, Vonnie went back to work as a Lab and X-Ray technician in Lemmon, SD. This is where she met the love of her life, Sid Lichtenfelt, through mutual friends in 1988. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married on August 19, 1989 at Shadehill Reservoir complete with a cake topped with a prairie dog bride and groom. Vonnie loved the outdoors. She and Sid spent countless hours shooting prairie dogs and cow pies together. She became a great marksman often embarrassing her brothers in shooting contests. Vonnie's coyote calling prowess was also quite remarkable ad it was something she took great pride in. As if she needed another hobby, Vonnie became quite the "amateur" paleontologist. She spent thousands of hours digging, prepping, casting, and preserving a vast array of dinosaur bones. Vonnie had a real passion for the prehistoric turtles, piecing tighter shells tiny piece by tiny piece. Much of her work is on display at the Pioneer Trails Museum in Bowman, and the Petrified Park Museum in Lemmon, SD. Soon after Vonnie took several youngsters under her wing teaching them how to prep and prepare dinosaur bones. She even had a graduation ceremony for the students after they completed their own fossil. Bull riding was another passion of hers. She planned her time around the PBR on television and was known to hoot and holler for her favorite rider, Justin McBride. She also rode bulls herself back in her wilder days and made the front page of the Fallon Co. Times. Vonnie was also a great cook and was famous for her peanut butter balls, candy cane cookies and cucumber dip and sharing her treats with all who wanted.
Vonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Gabe and Hazel and her sister, Rebecca Kromarek. She is survived by her husband Sid Lichtenfelt of Bowman, ND, her sister, Mary (Harry) Pierce of Soldotna, AK, brothers, Mike Zacher of Stanford,MT, Gabe (Candy) Zacher of Duluth, GA, and Joe Zacher of Marmarth, ND. Nieces and nephews surviving their auntie Vonnie are Matt Zacher, Rochelle Bradford, Shawna Johnson, Shelly Walters, Nicole Kromarek, Kayla Kromarek and Renee Brosten. Vonnie was a very kind and most generous person and will be truly missed by all who knew her.
