Bill was born November 2, 1929 at the start of the depression to Leslie William Austin and Edna Louella Parker Austin in Peaceful Valley Township north of Amidon, ND. He was the eighth son in a family of 10 brothers, with the yougest child being their little sister.
Bill attended country school until the family acquired a home in Marmarth, ND so the four younger children could attend school with Edna and the school kids moving to town for the school year.He completed his last years of grade school in Marmarth as well as graduated from high school there.
Bill was an extremely hard working man who was a perfectionist in everything he did. It had to be straight and level!!! In high school to earn money, he put on dances on the weekend, picked berries, did gardens, what ever way he could earn money.
He began his adult life building and repairing grain elevators all over the upper midwest, followed by working for a company erecting steel buildings after which, he soon formed his own construction company, Austin Construction, and poured cement of all kinds as well as putting up any kind of steel building.Cement floors didn't have cracks in his world.
Another change took place in 1963 when Bill purchased his father's ranch north of Amidon and started to ranch. In June, he married Betty Anderson, his soul mate and partner in every aspect of ranching and life for the next 58.5 years.
In the first years of ranching, Bill's first project was to remodel the ranch house, put in running water and a bathroom. Next was the ranch improvement projects where he built many, many miles of cross fences (They were straight and tight wires) as well as putting in dams and developing springs. His next project was to start an artifical insemmination program allowing him to develop an outstanding herd of papered simmentals. Next project was installing water lines to all the pastures for fresh water from two deep wells.
In 1988 Bill decided to retire and sold the cattle followed by the ranch in 1990. We then built a winter home in Mesquite Nevada, but starting to travel in our various motorhomes which Bill loved. Bill also loved to dance, it was "polish my boots"its time to go dancing. However, during calving season it was time to stay home. He was an excellent woodworker and his home shows his skill. He also enjoyed camp ground hosting which we did for a number of years at Buffalo Gap Campground west of Medora. He spent countless hours working his word puzzle books. Yes, the lines were straight!
Bill is survived by his best friend and soul mate, Betty; his daughters Christine (Jeff); Connie (Kenny) Cindy; Doneta (Lee) and Diane (Darrel) and son Wayne; 12 grand children and 21great grandchildren; one Sister, Janice Speiser, three sisters-in-law Helen, Sharon and Zola, and brother in law Robert (Vicki) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill joins his parents Les and Edna Austin; all 9 of his brothers, Leslie, Jr; Dode; James (Mabel); Max; Stanley; Winfield (Beverly);Llowell (Lucille); Carol; and Dennis. He is also proceeded by his in-laws, Wally and Clara Anderson, a brother in law and two sister in laws.
He will be missed and as a great niece says," I like to think that Bill is driving that big ol RV in heaven now!!! " Yes, he is.
