Obituary

William "Bill" Mason, Sr., 98, of Bowman, ND, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Center in Bowman.   Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 10:00 am MST at the St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman with burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery.   There will be a Rosary and Vigil service on Friday, September 15, 2023 beginning at 7:00 pm MST at the St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman.

William M. "Bill" Mason was born south of Marmarth, ND to Helen G. (Kulas) Mason and Charles F. Mason on September 11, 1925, the 5th of 8 children (6 boys and 2 girls). He started grade school at age 5 at rural Sunny Slope School District, taking 2 grades in the same year, then on to Marmarth High School, graduating in 1941 at the ripe old age of 15! After working for his dad on the family farm for a few years, in 1947 he moved to Miles City, Montana and began working in the tire department at Montgomery Ward. While living there, he met his future wife, Genevieve(Genny) Lutz, who was working for J.C. Penney, also in Miles City. A mutual friend introduced them at a dance! After "courting" for about 2 years, they were married November 17, 1949 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman.

To this union came three boys: Les(Gail) of Bismarck, born in Bowman; Barry(Becky) of Rapid City, born in Glendive, MT; and Bill Jr.(Connie) of Bowman, born in Plentywood, MT.

After moving back to Bowman in 1951, Bill worked for the ND Highway Dept., then began a 6 year stint with Petty Geophysical Engineering Company. Seismograph crews move frequently, and he worked and lived in North & South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana! In 1958 he moved the family back to Bowman and began working for H&H Service. He then worked at Louie's Standard for a couple of years, purchasing the station in 1962 from Louis Germann. After being the owner/operator for the next 31 years, he "retired" in 1993. At that time, he began delivering cars for Bowman Sales & Service until he really retired in 2011.

October of 2021 brought another change when he entered Southwest Healthcare Center in the swing bed area where he resided until his death.

Bill is survived by his wife Genny, sons Les(Gail), Barry(Becky), Bill(Connie), 7 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; brother Jerry(Betty), Pacific, MO and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, siblings: Merle, Violet, Robert, Ted, Jack and Arlene, and one grandson, Eric.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Charles Catholic Church in Bill's name.
