Stanley Palczewski, Sr., 98, of Scranton, ND passed away on October 21, 2024 at the Fallon Medical Long Term Care Center in Baker, MT.

Stanley Palczewski, Sr. was born on August 18, 1926 east of Haley, ND on the old Krowell place.  From the Krowell place, parents Joseph and Elizabeth moved to the homestead established by grandparents Vincent and Caroline Palczewski in 1908.  The original homesteaded house burnt down in 1924 and a new house was built for the family of Joseph and Caroline and kids Frank, Mary, Carl, Isabelle, Richard, Stanley and Martha .

Stanley met Marlene Vigoren, they were married in Buffalo, SD on October 4, 1952 and raised nine children, five girls and four boys.  They bought a 3 room house from brother Richard used as a bunkhouse and moved it to the homestead where it still stands today.  This house was added on 3 different times with the growing family.

The Joseph and Elizabeth house was later occupied by Martha and family after Erie Martin passed in the Vietnam War and Joseph and Elizabeth moved to a trailer a few feet away.  Martha and family were very close to Stanley. The families did many activities and holidays together on the homestead. Martha's children considered Stanley as another father.

Stanley's education was through the 8th grade.  The first four years to the school house southwest of the homestead about 2 miles.  He walked to school.  The last four years he went to the school house a mile west of the Davis barn.  For two years, he either rode horse, walked or had a 2 wheel cart with 2 horses hooked up.  Later, Sister Martha and Stanley most times walked to the Maychrzak place and rode rest of the way by car.

Stanley bought his first quarter of land in 1948 in Harding County by the ND/SD state line. To pay for the land he broke it up and planted flax.  He had a bumper crop and paid for the land after the first year.  He purchased more land in ND in 1957.  Stanley bought his father and mother's land (the homestead) in February of 1960.  He also bought his father's cattle.  He bought sheep in 1957 and raised sheep until 1980 and then only raisedcattle. After getting his brand for the cattle, he decided to name the ranch The Tree Top Ranch, with the T over T brand (no line in between).

Stanley had a sand and gravel business called Stan's Sand and Gravel.  He hauled many loads of washed sand to the oil well pads north of Buffaloand around the region.

For fun times and enjoyment, Stanley and Marlene spent many hours with neighbors and friends. He loved to play cards mainly pinochle and sometimes whist.  He loved to go to the Bowman Haley Dam with the Grubers, play cards, and do their rain dances.  Stanley enjoyed the picnicswith family, neighbors and friends.  More recently, Pinochle continued with Venoy and Stub and us kids.  After Marlene's death, Stanley enjoyed friendship with Genevieve Fisher going out to eat, meeting at family events, and playing cards.

The barn was built in 1931 by his father.  A lot of the basketball games were played in the barn upper level.  It also had other uses such as barn dances and of course for the hay storage.  He also organized and coached the Haley baseball team.

He had a bowling team called Stan's Sand & Gravel.  He had many good times with his bowling friends.

Stanley and Marlene traveled to many sporting events the kids and grandkids were involved in throughout the years.  Basketball, track, baseball, softball, and motor cross were the main sports.  Stanley was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years.

Stanley's religious education and faith started when he was very young in the Catholic Church of Haley, ND.  He was taught catechism there by Father Smircheck.  After the Haley Church closed in the 40's, he attendedSacred Heart Church in Scranton, ND for the remainder of his years.  He loved going to mass and was very faithful.

Stanley loved his community and all the friends he gained over the years.

Stanley, at the age of 96, moved to assisted living in Hettinger in May of 2022 and then to Hettinger Long Term Care for a short time.  He moved to Fallon County Long Term Care in August 2023.
