Shirley Elizabeth Marking was born on the 7th of October, 1923, in Milwaukee, WI, to Edwin Julius and Elizabeth Clara Schumacher. She was raised and educated in Scranton, ND, where the family took up farming, then attended Capitol Commercial College and Bismarck Junior College.
Shirley married 2Lt Thomas E. Marking on November 27, 1943, in San Angelo, Texas, where he was stationed as a cadet in the Army Air Corp. During the war years, they resided at bases in Texas, Kansas and Utah. In the early 50's they moved to Fargo where Tom joined the ND Air National Guard (the Happy Hooligans). In 1967, they moved to the Washington, D.C., area for several years before returning to Bismarck, North Dakota in 1974. Tom died February 28th, 1978, in Bismarck and was laid to rest at the ND Veteran's Cemetery, where Shirley will now join him.
While in Bismarck, Shirley worked for St. Alexius Hospital and in the office at the Kirkwood Mall. She donated many hours to volunteer work in the community. Shirley was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Bismarck, held a lifetime membership in the ND National Guard Association of Retirees and was also a member of the Elks, Golden Kiwanis, the Tuesday Topics Study Club, and the Bismarck-Mandan Garden Club. She was an avid gardener and reader, enjoyed music in all forms, loved to travel, play cards and discuss politics.
Shirley deeply loved her family and her many dear friends. Surviving her are her brother Darrell Schumacher (and wife Lillian) of Bowman, ND; her son and daughter-in-law, B.T. and Vicky Marking, of Custer, SD; her daughter, Mary Marking-Russell, of London, England; her daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Dale Offermann, of Arlington, Washington; her four grandchildren: Susanna Marking-Stockl, Libby Marking, David and Olivia Russell; and a very special aunt, Anita Dinsmore, of Oregon, who was like a sister to Shirley.
Shirley is also survived by Tom's family: his half-brothers, Chuck Ronning (and wife Gloria) and Milan Ronning in Arkansas; and his half-sisters, Lois Pigeon (and husband, Pierre) of Scranton, and Donna Larson (and husband, Gary) of Grand Forks, ND.
