Sherman Oakland was born in Bowman County, ND, on March 21, 1929 the son of Ole and Ethel (Heide) Oakland. Sherman attended Nebo school through the 8th grade and then attended and graduated from Bowman High School in 1948. Sherman was a hard worker on the farm from the start. In 1951, Uncle Sam called Sherman out of the farm life to serve his country. One of his shining achievements was applying for and receiving paratrooper status in the 11th Airborne Division, while stationed at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. Another shining achievement was his marriage to Marilyn Bowman of Bowman, ND. They met in high school and after Marilyn finished nurses training, she boarded a train in Bowman, met Sherman at the train station in Columbus, crossed the border to Phenix City, Alabama, married and then shared 60 years of matrimony. To this union, two children were born; Jeff Jon and Beth Alane. Upon completion of his service to his country, Sherman and Marilyn moved back to Bowman. Sherman worked in construction until purchasing a farm south of Griffin and moving his family of four to a one hundred year old farmhouse in the country. They raised sheep, farmed grains and put up hay. And a barn. They put up the old barn. Sherman enjoyed his family, friends and fishing. A day was not complete without coffee, cards and cronies. We will miss his quick wit and humor.
Sherman is survived by his son, Jeff (Kim) Oakland of Rhame, ND; daughter; Beth Mollman of Rhame and three grandchildren, Lisa and Sarah Oakland and Evan Mollman; step grandchildren, Kelsi Jo Apedaile, 2 step great-grandchildren, Kinsley Jo and Crosby Ryan, niece Connie (Bill) Pingree and nephew Jon (Michele) Oakland.
Sherman was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, his parents, Ole and Ethel Oakland, brother Eugene Oakland and son-in-law Stewart Mollman.
Memorial suggested to: Bowman United Methodist Church, Bowman and Rhame Fire Departments, Southwest Healthcare and the Fallon County Medical Center.
