Russell Kulseth was born January 4, 1929, in Bowman, ND to Joe and Ruth (Albert) Kulseth. He grew up on the farm just south of Rhame with his younger sister, Delores (Koch), and attended Adelaide School through eighth grade. Though he always had ranching in his heart, Russell moved to Bowman in the late 1940s to take a job with Stuber-Jensen Equipment as a mechanic. As fate would have it, a trip to Chub Bagley's radiator shop in 1948 would introduce him to Delberta Mae Bagley. Two years later they were married and they rarely spent time apart for nearly 70 years.
Despite only having an eighth-grade education, Russell went on to start Kulseth Construction and built many homes, pole barns, and buildings around Bowman County. In addition to his business, he was ready to lend a hand to those needing help or advice on projects, as well as contributing to larger efforts such as the Lutheran Church parsonage. Russell was a perfectionistand had high standards for everything he did.
Russell and Delberta lived a full life and enjoyed dancing and traveling to over 40 states, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. For many years following retirement Russell focused his perfectionist energy on his yard, garden, and Christmas lights. Nonstop watering and work resulted in a lawn that would rival many putting greens, and he took great pleasure in ribbing people about having the earliest ripe tomatoes and getting his potatoes in the ground by Good Friday. Christmas lights on "Bagley Avenue" were the highlight for many in town!
A few of Russell's favorite things were always a good dog nearby, lutefisk and lefse, paint horses, woodworking, Chevy pickups, and supervising grandkids from his easy chair.
We find joy in knowing that Russell has been reunited with Delberta, and he will be forever remembered by his children LaVern Kulseth, Juanita (Jamie) Byrne, and Bruce (Sonni) Kulseth. Also blessed for being able to share his life are LaVern's family: Shannon and children Serena, Tyler and Jackson, and Kellie and children Harper and Tipper; Juanita's family: Mindy Yates and children Adlen, Ayla, Sasha and Tanner, and Kristi (Kyle) Sander and children Amelia and Wayne; and Bruce and Sonni's granddaughter, Jayden Forsberg. Also surviving Russell are nephews, Mike, Delbert, and Kirk; and nieces Gwen, Theresa and Lynette.
Russell was preceded in death by his wife Delberta, parents Joe and Ruth Kulseth, sister Delores and brother-in-law Milton Koch, two infant siblings, father and mother in-law Delbert "Chub" and Florence Bagley, grandchildren Stevie Beth Kulseth, CeJae Forsberg, and Justis Alex Kulseth, brother-in-law Mel Bagley and wife Meredythe, nephew Kevin Bagley, and niece Jodell Gleason.
