Robert Calvin Olson was born on February 19, 1925, to Arthur and Edith Olson in Finley, North Dakota. The family moved often during his high school years, with Robert graduating in 1943 in Bowman, North Dakota. That same year, he entered the Army's aviation engineers at Geiger Field in Spokane, Washington, and was transferred to Fort Lewis for basic training. During World War II, Robert was stationed in New Guinea at Fort Mosby. Robert built airstrips, roads and worked on General McArthur's headquarters in Hollandia, New Guinea, and Manila, Philippines. Once the war ended, Robert was discharged from Fort Lewis in January 1946.
On his return, Robert settled in Bowman, working in the drugstore of his brother-in-law, Abe Bennett. In a year's time, Robert had saved enough to purchase Joe's Lunch, a small café on Main Street. As he would throughout his life, beginning by selling papers at age eight, Robert worked long hours to ensure the success of his businesses. Within a few years, he bought half-interest in Bennett's Drug Store.
Robert Olson married Ruth Arithson on March 6, 1949. They were married 56 years. He was an involved member of his community, serving on the boards of the local hospital, the Chamber of Commerce and Bowman Lutheran Church. Robert was also a member of the Lions Club for 25 years. He was genuinely interested in the lives and wellbeing of others, always sparing time for conversation. He was a generous friend, relative, father and community member. He will be missed by many.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruth; his parents; and his siblings Art Olson, Evelyn Olson, Adele Bennett, and Elmer Olson. He is survived by his brother Maynard Olson; three children, Ken (Diane) Olson, Renee (Dick) Noel, and LuAnne (Jack) Shannon; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials in Robert's name may be made to the charity of your choice.
