He moved with his family to Buffalo, SD, in 1956 and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1960. Buzz worked as a ranch hand for the Helms and Nygaard families where he met his future wife, Astrid Bratvold of Bowman, ND. The two were married April 28, 1965. He was deployed to Vietnam with the Army and returned home January 1966. The two worked on Werre's farm place until June of 1967 and then moved to Buffalo, SD. Their daughter Lisa was born on February 22, 1968, and then Brenda on October 10, 1969. In February of 1971, the family moved to Painter Ranch south of Ladner, SD,until April 1974 when they moved to Bowman, ND. Buzz worked as a mechanic for International and John Deere and drove truck for Getter Trucking for a number of years. He thenworked hauling water for Luff Exploration until he retired in 2008. In his retirement, Buzz worked part time for family friend, Gary Loder.
Buzz and Astrid enjoyed many trips together. When the kids were young, there were camping trips, trips to Seattle, WA, and to Yellowstone. They visited their daughter Brenda in Florida and saw Epcot in 1990 and then Okinawa, Japan in 1992. They traveled to Norway to see Astrid's family in 2006 and, as a retirement gift from Luff Exploration, took an Alaskan Cruise in 2008.
