Norman was baptized at Lebanon Lutheran Church on June 10th, 1945. He was raised on the family farm and ranch west of Amidon. He lived there his whole life with the exception of his time in the Navy.
Norman's childhood years were spent horseback looking after cattle, exploring Slope County, and being active in 4-H. He rode horse to grade school in Amidon as often as he could. Norman graduated from Bowman High School in the spring of 1963. He worked as a truck driver for Miller Construction until 1965.
On September 29, 1965, Norman enlisted in the United States Navy serving aboard the USS Hugh Pervis. During his enlistment, he traveled to many parts of the world including the Panama Canal, Hong Kong, Hawaii, New Zealand, and the coast of Vietnam. He also spent a year stationed in Iceland. Norman was honorably discharged August 15, 1969.
Upon returning home, Norman worked at the bar and the service station in Amidon. In the fall of 1971 he began working for Slope County. For the next 40 years he was best known as "the county blade man." Norman spent countless hours maintaining roads and plowing snow.
Norman was united in marriage to Lynn Steig on December 28, 1973. Together they raised five children with many hours spent around the kitchen table playing whist. They enjoyed taking their children fishing. Norman had a deep love for a good toe-tapping song and dancing. Norman was an active and dedicated member of the Amidon Fire Department, where he was most often found driving trucks or rolling fire breaks with the grader.
Norman had a lifelong appreciation for good horses and cattle, telling stories about "that long legged sorrel I had." His other passion in life was fixing anything, telling his kids "the only two things I can't fix are the crack of dawn and a broken heart."
