Mervin "Denny"
Olson
Feb 20, 1936 — Aug 19, 2018
Bowman
Mervin "Denny" Olson, 82 of Bowman, ND, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the Hill Top Home of Comfort in Killdeer, ND.
Memorial Services for Denny will be on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Pastor Jackie Bloom will officiate with burial at a later date.
Denny was born February 20, 1936 the fourth child of ten to Mervin W. Olson and Signe (Eikren) Olson in Rawson, ND.
Denny grew up on the family farm south of Rawson, ND and attended school in Arnegard, ND graduating in 1954. He attended Minot State Teacher's College, completing a Business Teaching degree. Denny married his high school sweetheart Barbara Stenseth on August 23, 1958 at Wilmington Lutheran Church in Arnegard, ND. They had two daughters, Debbie and Michelle.
In 1960, Denny & Barb moved to Bowman where Denny began his teaching career at Bowman High School. He taught various business and physical educations classes. He also spent a few years coaching basketball, and many years as the advisor for multiple school organizations such as yearbook, junior class, FBLA, and the National Honor Society. He was often affectionately called "Mr. O" by his students. After 32 years at BHS, Denny retired to spend more time with his grandchildren Sheldon & Andrea.
As far back as we can remember, we spent most of our summers in rural Arnegard where dad helped family members with livestock, spring planting, and harvest in the fall until renting land on his own. He was a hard working man and farmer at heart, but retired from farming in 1992. Although he had a love for farming, his greatest love was his family. Denny was a wonderful, loving, patient and kind husband, dad, and grandpa. When his grandchildren came along they were his joy, and he spent a majority of his retirement going to every event they had.
In retirement, Denny enjoyed being a hired man for Burk Bowman, the Hilton Brothers and others. He also enjoyed doing remodeling projects around the house, and of course, restoring his tractors.
Denny is survived by his wife Barb, daughters Debbie (Chuck) Kouba, Rapid City, SD, Michelle (Carl) Dacar, Dickinson, ND, grandchildren Sheldon Dacar, Bismarck, ND, Andrea (Kyle) Schulte, Moorhead, MN, and Shad Kouba, Rapid City, SD. Brothers Keith (Marlene) Olson, Philip (Caralynn) Olson, John (Carolyn) Olson, sisters Joy Nelson, Bonnie Norris, Shirley (Ed) Boger, Karen (Merton) Johnsrud, Pennie Anderson and Diann (Rex) Gibbs, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mervin W and Signe Olson and brothers-in-law Alden Johnson, Walt Helgeson, Norm Nelson, Ron Norris, and Loren Anderson, and niece Gayle Erickson.
