Mavis J.
Thompson
Apr 3, 1931 — Oct 15, 2021
Beulah
Mavis JoAnn (Maas) Thompson passed away October 15, 2021 at Knife River Care Center in Beulah, surrounded by her family. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. MDT Wednesday, October 20 at Peace Lutheran Church, Scranton. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church and also on Tuesday at the funeral home chapel from 12-9 Burial will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church cemetery south of Rhame.
Mavis was born April 3, 1931 to Frank and Nathalia "Dolly" Idler Maas in Iowa. Mavis was number four of ten children, six boys and four girls. Mavis attended Rhame School through the tenth grade. She worked in her Mom's café in Rhame, where she met Oliver Thompson, who had just arrived home from Korea, looking handsome in his Army uniform. They were married on June 11, 1949 at Peace Lutheran Church in Scranton. Mavis and Oliver were blessed with three sons and two daughters.
Mavis and Oliver lived in many different towns and states. Their children were born in Montana, Wisconsin and North Dakota. Oliver was a railroad man, so the family moved from place to place until making their permanent home in Scranton, North Dakota in 1962. Mavis worked full time at Hildestad Hardware and Rodd's Electric for years. Then she went to work for Elder Care on July 3, 1989, cooking congregate meals at the Golden Miners for 22 years. She finally hung up her apron and rang her last bell at the age of 81. The Golden Miners family was so important to Mavis. She spoiled them rotten! Everything was decorated for the seasons, and she was always giving little gifts and holiday treasures to her Golden Miners family. She loved them all so much!
Family and friends were so important to Mavis. She met regularly with her Scranton coffee klatch friends, playing cards and laughing, always sharing news about her family. Mavis was a natural caregiver, which was so evident in her jobs and care of her family. She put everyone else's needs before her own. She was the most unselfish, caring and strong woman.
In August 2017 Mavis was admitted to Knife River Care Center in Beulah, North Dakota. She was a victim of dementia, but her caring and compassionate nature continued. She had so many friends, and the family at KRCC loved her and served her with patience and great care. It was so common for Mom to "serve" her friends with a hot cup of cappuccino at the "Hen's Corner." There they laughed and gossiped and had a great old time together. God bless those people who made Mavis' life more bearable at the end of her years.
God played an important role in Mavis' life. She was active in Peace Lutheran Church's organization and women's groups. It was evident, even at the end of her life, she was comfortable and thankful knowing that God was at work in all aspects of her life.
Mavis is preceded in death by her husband Oliver, parents Frank and Dolly Maas, brothers Kenny, Chuck, Mike, Larry and Beryl, and sister Kathy. She is survived and will be missed by her brother Donny Maas, sisters Norma (Harold) Schneider and Mary Holgard (George), and her five children: Wally of Bismarck, Wayne (Therese) of Baker, Linda Czywczynski (Dave) of Beulah, Kermit (Evie) of Devils Lake, and Kay Roth (Todd) of Mandan, eleven grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mavis was the best wife, mom, sister, grandma, auntie and friend anyone could ever have. God bless her in heaven.
