Marvis L Johnson Miller was born March 28, 1930 to Ole and Mabel (Paulson) Johnson. She was the second of three children. Marvis was raised on the family farm south of New England, ND. She attended grade school near her home at Strehlow School #1 and then graduated from New England High School in 1948. After high school, Marvis attended Dickinson State College and earned a Teaching Certificate. She then taught school for one term at Coalbank School in Hettinger County, and one term at White Lake School #1 in Slope County. Her term at White Lake School #1 was the last year for that school. The former school building is now located at the Slope County Fairgrounds, where it can be visited as a one-room school museum each year during the Slope County Fair.
Marvis married Roland J (Buster) Miller on October 16, 1950 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Amidon, ND. They were married for 64 years and had eight children; two sons and six daughters. For the first four years after they were married, Buster and Marvis lived in a trailer house at the family farmstead west of Amidon where Buster's parents also lived. Buster farmed and ranched with his father. In 1954, they built their own house on another location where they raised their family. In time, they took over and farmed and ranched for over30 years and were active in the community. In 1979, they bought a house in Bowman, and later retired from the ranch in 1988.Marvis lived in that house until 2023, when she then moved to the Sunrise Village. She was warmly welcomed by the community up there and thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by wonderful people.
Buster and Marvis enjoyed their retirement. They took several trips around the United States and one to Canada. They also enjoyed spending time with neighbors and friends having coffee and visiting. They were able to enjoy spending time with their kids and grandkids, many of whom lived close to them.
Marvis was active in the communities in which she lived. She was a member of several groups, including Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church, St Charles Catholic Church, the Amidon Homemakers, Saint Peter and Paul Alter Guild, St Charles Alter Guild, and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed several activities throughout her life. Her favorite pastime was reading. She loved reading all different types of stories and was a frequent visitor to the public library after moving to Bowman. For a number of years after she retired, she and a group of ladies would make an occasional day trip to Deadwood to have lunch and play slot machines. She limited herself to nickel machines, but still managed to win a jackpot or two. She also enjoyed going to play bingo with her friends and was a frequent winner at that as well. Buster always said he never worried about getting into a car accident with her, because she was the luckiest person he ever met. She was on a bowling team for several years and also enjoyed gardening and going to watch her grandkids sports events.
The most treasured thing in Marvis's life was her family. Nothing meant more to her than her kids, grandkids and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings at her house got bigger and bigger over the years as the family grew, but there was always plenty of fun and laughter and she somehow always managed to make sure there was plenty of food, even enough for leftovers. She was a wonderful cook and loved baking goodies to have on hand for anyone that stopped by. No one ever left her house hungry, even if it was just a short visit. Her chocolate chip cookies were legendary. Numerous family members have the recipe today. Although a few have come close, NO ONE has ever gotten them to turn out exactly like hers! Just one of many memories of her that will always make her family smile. Marvis always kept close track of everyone in the family and was an active part of all of their lives. Over the years, she attended countless sporting events, concerts, school programs, weddings, and other events for everyone in the family. Later in life, when her eyesight kept her from traveling on her own, she spent countless hours on the phone at home talking to her kids and grandkids making sure everything was going well. In her calm, caring way she was the rock of the family. Through good times or bad, she was always there for everyone, even in her final days.
Marvis is survived by her children: Michell (Warren) Flath, Bowman, ND; Gary (Stacey) Miller, Amidon, ND; Karen (Wayne) Gerbig, Amidon, ND; Rene (Bob) Whalen, Hamilton, MT; Rhonda Buer (Joe Hoffman), Huntley, MT; Brenda (Chris) Palczewski, Bowman, ND; and Shad Miller, Bismarck, ND; son-in-law Aaron (Peggy) Allen, Bowman, ND; her brother Willis Johnson, Dickinson, ND; 23 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and many extended family members, neighbors and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Buster Miller, daughter Janet Allen, her parents Ole and Mabel Johnson, her sister Ardelle Kovar, brother-in law Hank Kovar, and sister-in-law Inez Johnson.
