Patsy was born in Rhame, ND, on May 14, 1925, the daughter of Oliver and Nellie Erickson. She was the youngest of four children. She lived in Rhame until she was a second grader. Her family moved to Scranton where she attended school until she was a sophomore. She and her family then moved to Bowman where she finished high school and graduated in 1943. Patsy met Martin Septon through their siblings and they married in Baker, MT, on June 22, 1943. Patsy was a stay-at-home mom through most of her children's youth. That meant we walked home for
"dinner" which was our big meal for the day. She was always home when we got home from school and we were often greeted by the smells of freshly baked buns or cookies. She also found time for coffee with neighborhood friends when they gathered in someone's kitchen and they developed very close friendships. Martin and Patsy were excellent dancers, and they enjoyed many evenings with friends at the Flagstone Terrace with breakfast afterwards at someone's house. Martin and Patsy were members of the Bowman Lutheran Church for their entire 67 years of marriage and were longtime members of the Sons of Norway. Patsy started working at the Sunset Home in 1968 in the kitchen and then the laundry room where she worked until her retirement. Patsy was an amazing cook and an excellent baker who showed her love through food. She used to start her Christmas baking shortly after Thanksgiving and continued up until Christmas. We have many Septon family favorites, but she is best known for her homemade buns and soft molasses cookies. The recipe for soft molasses cookies was given to her mother by a family friend, Mrs. Clara Skare, who worked at the Butte Café in Rhame, which was owned by Patsy's parents. Mrs. Skare didn't use a recipe but made them from memory. Nellie was always encouraging her to write the recipe down, which she never did, until Nellie sat her down one day and made her write the recipe down for her. Patsy and Martin had a home in Bowman where she lived until after Martin died in 2010. She then moved in the Sunny Apartments where she lived until entering the nursing home in 2019. She kept up with currents events and was our person to ask when we needed to know what was happening, past or present. It was amazing.
Patsy is preceded in death by her parents Oliver and Nellie, husband Martin, son Richard, grandson, Darin, brother Warren Erickson and sisters, Marion Ehrmantrout and Bernice Schoen.
She is survived by her three children; James (Cooky) Septon of Bowman, ND, Lynn (Renee) Septon of Williston, ND, and Lola (Adrian) Hovda of Fargo, ND and daughter in law, Rita Septon. She was a grandmother to 10 children, great grandmother to 15 children and a great-great grandmother to 1. She is also survived by a nephew and 2 nieces and a very dear and caring friend Lee Ann "Frieda" Freih whom she loved like a daughter. Our entire family is forever grateful to Frieda for all the love and care she provided mom over the years.
