Lester Warnke, 95, of Scranton, North Dakota, went home to heaven on April 3, 2012.

Lester was born July 30, 1917 in his parents' farm house about 15 miles north of Scranton, North Dakota, the son of George August Warnke and Dora Warnke (Ohlen). He was preceded in death by his two younger brothers, Roy Warnke and Glenn Warnke.

He enlisted in the military on October 30, 1942 and went to boot camp at Great Lakes. He then went to gunnery school is Gulfport, MS, then to England, Normandy, and North Africa in WWII. Lester was honorably discharged on March 3, 1946.

After his service to our country, he returned home to the farm and lived there his entire life as a wheat farmer. He never married.

When his father, George Warnke, passed away in 1936, he stayed home to care for his mother, Dora, until she passed away in 1953.

In the latter years, during the winter seasons, he would move to an apartment in Scranton or Bowman until the spring weather arrived and then return to the farm.

He is survived by his nephews Butch Warnke and Bryan (his wife, Heidi) Warnke, his niece Renee Tollefson (Warnke) who all currently reside in Spokane, Washington.

All of us wish to extend heartfelt gratitude and many thanks to Marwin & Mona Stafford for all they have done in helping us care for our uncle, as we lived so far away. Thank you!!

We also want to thank all the wonderful people at Western Horizons Care Center, where Lester resided for the last 3 ½ years. Thank you for taking such good care of him!!
