Larry Duane Trainor, 81, from Great Falls, Montana and Green Valley, Arizona was called home Tuesday, October 12, 2021.
Larry was born at his family home in Bowman, North Dakota on June 15, 1940 to Marshall and Lillian Trainor. He was raised in Bowman along with his 4 sisters. Losing his Dad when he was only 14, Larry helped provide for his family while attending school. He graduated from Bowman High School in 1958. In between working, going to school, and being a rambunctious teen, he found time for baseball. He absolutely loved the game and went from bat boy, to player, to coach. He always spoke fondly of his humble beginning in Bowman and his "Love of the Game" that would last a lifetime. He loved telling the story of the time he sat on the bus and talked baseball with Charley Pride when he was playing ball in the area.
Following his graduation from high school, Larry took advantage of the GI Bill and joined the Army for 2 years to help pay for his college education. He attended Dickinson State University and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business. His next adventure would be teaching accounting and business at Blackfoot High School in Blackfoot, ID for 3 years. Larry's roots ran deep and Bowman was calling him to return with a great business opportunity to purchase Windy's Baron Main Street with Darwin Stebbins. It was here that one of his barmaids, Betsyann McGee, captured his attention and a new romance began. After a couple of years owning and operating the bar, Larry decided it was time for Graduate school. He was accepted into the MBA program at the University of Montana in Missoula and convinced Betsy that she should accompany him. On December 6, 1969, Larry and Betsy were married in a small ceremony at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Missoula, MT. They welcomed their daughter, Charmaine Ann, on December 12, 1970 and in February of 1971, Larry began his career in the insurance industry as an agent for Montana Farmers Union. On January 2, 1974, Larry and Betsy welcomed their son Marshall James the II. In May of 1974, Larry accepted a position with National Farmers Union in Denver and moved hisfamily there. While in Denver, Larry became a Chartered Life Underwriterand added CLU to his title. They also welcomed their third child, a son, Michael Duane on March 18, 1976 who passed away in infancy. The next move for the Trainor family was in 1977 to Rapid City, SD where Larry accepted a position as the District Manager for Western South Dakota. In January of 1978, Larry accepted the position of Manager of Accounting and Investments at Montana Farmers Union's home office in Great Falls, MT. It was here where he and Betsy raised their family. Larry enjoyed coaching Marshall's Little League baseball teams and he was always at Charmaine's and Marshall's activities, cheering loudly and applauding their accomplishments. At Montana Farmers Union, Larry advanced to the Senior Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer and finally the President and C.E.O. on January 1, 1998. Unfortunately, after more than 25 years of loving and supporting Larry, Betsy passed away in April of 1996 and watched from above as he achieved some of his biggest successes. Larry was blessed to find love again when he met Kay Geis in 1998. Together they traveled and shared their home in Green Valley, AZ for over 20 years. After working for Farmers Union Insurance for 41 years, Larry retired on December 31, 2012. Larry and Kay were married October 8, 2021.
Larry loved to travel and was able to see many places across the globe including Ireland, Germany, England, the Bahamas, Mexico, Canada, and places all across the US. Larry was passionate about the game of golf. He played at many of the top courses and was thrilled when he was able to attend the Master's Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. He was a very sharp dresser and loved a great suit. Larry enjoyed a great New York steak, a good cigar, a crisp glass of Chardonnay, and a scotch on the rocks. His greatest title, Papa, came with the birth of his grandchildren, Cassandra in 1998, Alexander in 2002, and Gabriel in 2009. His grandchildren brought him so much pride and joy and he loved sharing stories about all of their activities and accomplishments. They were so loved and spoiled rotten by him. We have all been blessed to have this incredible man be a part of our lives. He will be dearly missed and forever loved.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Marshall and Lillian Trainor, sisters Marlene (Chuck) Baker and Marsha Schaff, brother Michael Trainor, his first wife Betsyann McGee Trainor and son Michael Trainor, niece Kristal Baker and nephew Kevin Baker.
He is survived by his daughter Charmaine (Matt) Barker, Helena, MT; and son Marshall James Trainor II, Wolf Creek, MT; Grandchildren Cassie, Alex, and Gabe Barker, Helena, MT; his second wife Kay Geis, Miles City, MT & Green Valley, AZ; sisters Joan Soehren, Bowman, ND; and Shug (Duane) Lutz, Bowman, ND; and many nieces and nephews.
