Joe was born at his grandmother's home in Lansford, ND in May 27, 1932, to Morgan and Mathilda (Handeland) Tysver. His mother named him Martin Joseph Tysver, but when she brought him home to the ranch, in the Badlands north of the Killdeer Mountains, his father did not like the name Martin. He became Joe to his father, Joseph to his mother, and Joseph M. Tysver for the rest of his life. Joe grew up on the ranch and learned to split and haul wood, and haul water and coal, by the time he was five. He learned to drive the old '28 Chevy pickup at a very young age and would drive his parents to town.
Joe attended Oakdale and Benson schools through 6th grade, and then the Hawkinson school through the 8th grade. He started high school in Stanley while living with his sister, Myrtle, but returned home to help with the ranch. He spent the summer he was 14 in Ferguson Falls, MN, working on a cousin's dairy farm. He then completed two more years of high school while living in Dickinson with his brother, Louis. He joined the National Guard, and started drilling water wells with his brother, Melvin.
While attending a Sadie Hawkins Valentine's Day dance, he met the love of his life, Annie Lester. They were married August 8, 1956, in Alexander, ND. They made their home in Dunn Center, ND, where Joe worked as a water-well driller and a city policeman. In 1969, Joe and Annie moved to Bowman, ND, with their 5 children, where Joe continued to work as a well-driller. In 1972, due to back problems, Joe took a job as a policeman in Scranton, ND, which he continued until his retirement. Joe was active in the American Legion, and helped his son, Harold, start Tysver Well Drilling, which he continued to help with until Harold's death in 2014.
Joe is survived by his children: Albert (Tonya) Tysver, Hulett, WY; Judy (Ron) Gangl, Solen, ND; Irvin Tysver, Billings, MT; Tom (Karla) Tysver, Bismarck, ND; and (Marion Erickson), Scranton, ND: grandchildren Holly Gangl, Bismarck, ND; Monte (Michelle) Gangl, Solen, ND; Ryan (Chelsay) Tysver, Mandan, ND; Morgan Tysver, Savage, MT; Kanyon Tysver, Savage, MT; Colton Tysver, Billings, MT; his step-grandchildren Marcus Jahner, Fargo, ND; Mason Jahner, Fargo, ND; Kellee (Thomas) Hann, Fargo, ND; Billy Erickson, Scranton, ND; Bobby (Veronica) Erickson, Kendallville, IN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife; Annie, his son Harold; his daughter-in-law Karla; two sisters: Alma Palmquist and Myrtle Lokken; five brothers: David, Melvin, Dave, Louis, and Daniel; three sisters-in-law: Maggie, Alice, and Monica; two brothers-in-law: Archie Palmquist and Milo Lokken; an infant grandson, Kelly Gangl; and several nieces and nephews.
If a memorial is preferred, it may be given in Joe's name to Bowman Assembly of God Church.
