Jon Val Hendrickson was born on February 25, 1944 to Melford and Phyllis (Luff) Hendrickson at the Bert Hale House in Bowman, ND. There was a lot of snow the winter of 1944, so Jon stayed with his grandmother and great- aunt in Rhame for six weeks as a baby. When they could make their way home, they had a hard time getting through all the snow in Adelaide Township. Jon was the fourth of six children in the Hendrickson family. He attended eight years at the Adelaide Township county school, southwest of Rhame, then completing his high school career graduating from Rhame High School in 1962.
Due to his father's illness, Jon was called back from the draft and received a hardship deferment to stay home and manage the farm and ranch operation. Jon asked Bernadette to dance at Mill Iron and as they say, the rest is history! On November 8, 1969 Jon married the love of his life, Bernadette Domagala. Jon and Bernadette purchased the homestead in 1972 from Jon's mother, Phyllis. Jon took great pride in his family homestead and worked very hard adding land, fences, and buildings to continually improve the family operation. This love of the ranch and the land he called home was evident in the crops and livestock that he showed at local, county and state fair. Since 1909 there has been a Jon Hendrickson on the family ranch. In 2009, The Hendrickson Homestead celebrated 100 years of being a working family farm and ranch with a family reunion and celebration with friends, neighbors and family far and wide. The Hendrickson family ranch will continue to flourish with the passing of the operation to Brett and Maretta.
To this union, they lovingly raised five sons and one daughter providing them with what they needed and teaching them to be honest, respectful, loving and caring to all those around them. Over the years, Jon and Bernadette attended as many plays, music concerts, grandparents' day celebrations, volleyball and basketball games of all nineteen grandchildren that they could fit into their schedule! Their children's and grandchildren's activities and events were their pride and joy. Jon shared his love of the Vikings and the Twins and teaching the kids and grandkids to play Pinochle and Whist with friends and family.
Some of Jon's notable accomplishments include serving as the Adelaide Township Treasurer for 48 years and Jon was a Brand Inspector for the North Dakota Stockmen's Association for 53 years as well as a Stockmen's Association member for 48 years. Jon was one of the longest active brand inspector in the state of North Dakota. Jon was also very proud of his bowling career. He loved bowling on leagues and in tournaments all over the country. He received plaques for bowling a 267 and 268 from the American Bowling Congress. Jon will be remembered fondly for his ability to fix anything. He was able to do any electrical, carpentry, welding and mechanical work he was given; using his talents to even invent items that made work easier around the ranch. Each of his grandchildren were blessed to be teased by his Donald Duck voice and enjoyed hand- crafted, welded toy cattle panels and calf- roping dummies.
Jon was a past member of the Rhame Lutheran Church council, Bowman Bowling Association. He served on the Farmer's Equity Elevator board, he was a charter member of both the American Maine- Anjou Association and the Dakota Maine- Anjou board. He served on the Bowman County Weed Board, FHA/FSA board and crop adjustor for 17 years, a River Rambler 4-H leader, a member of USCA, I- BAND, R- CALF, NDATC, a charter member of the Badlands Saddle Club and was an avid hunter.
