She attended Missouri Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in St. Joseph, MO graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1945. She worked as a night supervisor at Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph, MO then moved to Falls City, NE and began nursing at the hospital.

She met her future husband, Dale E. White, through her friend Mary Huber White who was married to Dale's brother. JoAnn quickly fell for Dale and often spoke of his handsome looks and his penmanship in the letters he wrote to her. They married on December 26, 1946 in Falls City, NE and then moved to Fargo, ND where Dale was enrolled in school and JoAnn starting working at St. John's Hospital. They farmed and raised their four children in Amor Township. She continued to work at St. Luke's Hospital and Clinic until November 1962 until she was forced to retired after losing her direct vision eyesight and could no longer work. JoAnn was so proud of her nursing degree and her time dedicated to taking care of others. After nursing, she spent many years enjoying her family and friends, traveling throughout Europe and the US, and feeding the Bowman community.

As a nurse, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a great hostess, JoAnn dedicated her life to selflessly caring for those around her. She loved her grandchildren and welcomed many people to her home with meals and friendship. JoAnn was known as one of the best bun makers in Bowman County. No one ever left her home hungry!

She was a member of the St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary and served as President. She was a member of the Bowman Lutheran Church and helped with School of Promise events.
