Born June 20, 1907 to James and Mary (Lukes) Svestka in Irequois, SD she came into the world early and fought to survive. She was so premature she was placed in a cigar box on top of a wood-burning stove to keep her warm. When Irma was six-months-old she and her four-year-old sister Alfonza moved with their parents to their new home in Fischbein Township; walking 8 miles from Reeder to get to their new farm.
Irma attended Breezy Hill School where she met her future husband Reinhold Alvin (Pat) Deutscher. They married in 1926 and were blessed with two children Douglas and Norma. They were together for 56 years until Pat's death in 1982.
Dancing was a passion for Irma and Pat, which was passed on to their children and grandchildren. Often when grandkids visited, out would come their dance records and all would dance. Irma and Pat especially loved to dance the polka. Their final dance together was the Schottische when they danced at their grandson Tom's wedding in 1976.
Irma loved living on the farm and everything it entailed. From the cattle and chickens to the fruit trees and gardens. She was also an amazing cook. Family loved when she was baking and would make her Kolaches! She always made plenty and was happy to share!
Except for when she and Pat were first married and they lived in Tacoma, Wash, Irma has lived nearly her entire life on the farm in Fischbein Township. She moved into the Sunny Apartments in September 2002 and in November 2003 moved into the Sunset Home (Southwest Healthcare) where she spent the remainder of her years.
During her lifetime she was a witness to many major events. From the Great Depression and the two World Wars to the progression from horse drawn plows to the tractors and machinery of today. She has seen good times and bad times and has stayed strong due to her faith in God.
Irma was an amazingly happy, warm and loving woman. She cherished her family and was treasured by them all. She had the sweetest smile and gave the greatest hugs and kisses. Even at 109, she recognized family and friends and was able to call them by name. She was a blessing to all who have known her.
Irma is survived by her niece, Donna Gunderson, Fargo, grandsons, Tom (Arlene) Deutscher, Bismarck, Joel (Carol) Deutscher, Lemmon, SD, Jonathon (Sharon) Deutscher, Sheridan, WY, Corey Deutscher (Carla Loder), Lemmon, SD, Jim (Sheila) Hagemeister, Kinsey, MT, Robert (Deb) Hagemeister, Kinsey, MT, Marty (Ann) Hagemeister, Miles City, MT, and Jack (Diana) Hagemeister, Moscow, ID, and granddaughters, Stephanie (Mark) Kelner, Scranton, Mary (Dick) Mack, Scranton, Laurie (Brian) Tuite, Finley, ND, Darcy (Shannon) Stafford, Dickinson, ND, and Julie (Jason) Bosserman, Golva, ND.
