Grace(Martin) Putney was born December 18, 1931 in Rhame to George and Pearl Putney and raised in Mound Township. After graduation from Rhame High School she went onto Dickinson State Teachers College and obtained her certificate to teach. She taught in one room rural schools at Richland Center & Mound schools. She sometimes road horseback to get to her teaching job.
Grace met her future husband (Ed) at their mutual place of employment (Leonard Bowman). They married October 3, 1951 in Baker MT. They lived on the Lampel place (with lots of mouse stories) then moved to the Huntley place that her parents had purchased in the early 30’s. Grace remained there till May 2017 when she moved to Bowman.
While in Slope County she and her husband raised 8 children. Toiling the land, farming, raising cattle, hogs, chickens and orphaned sheep that were bottle fed. Huge gardens, corn & miles of potatoes that kept her kids busy and fed the large family. She taught all her children to work hard and the girl’s sure knew how to clean, cook, bake and sew before they left home.
Not many grandkids can brag about having a grandma that served ice cream with a butter knife into a bowl with homemade Carmel or Chocolate sauce! They have many memories of jumping on hay bales that she told them explicitly not to do!
One of Grace’s favorite things to do was checking livestock and fence lines. She knew cow calf pairs by sight. After her move to Bowman she talked about how she missed seeing the cattle in the grass and the view of the pasture. Her favorite flowers planted around the farm were Lilac’s, Hollyhocks, Moss-Roses, 4 O’Clocks, Morning Glories and Petunias. Her favorite color was purple in all its shades. As we know, Grace never met a piece of paper, a box or ice cream pail she didn’t save, as it could be used for something else!!
Grace was active in St. Mel’s Alter Society and was a CCD teacher and on many a prayer chain. She enjoyed her activities with the Retired Teachers Association and presented demonstrations for students with her specialty of churning butter. She also was involved with quilting with the Rhame Lutheran ladies. She held many office titles for Mound Township board, keeping meticulous records. Grace and Ed were honored as “Grand Marshals” of the 2003 Rhame Gala Days Parade.
