George Bartholomew Brackin, Jr. was born December 23,1941 in Hankinson, ND the oldest of 6
children to George Brackin, Sr. and Clarice (Rollofson) Brackin.
George, Sr. was well known in the world of boxing in North Dakota. In turn, George, Jr. was a
member of The Golden Gloves throughout his youth and into high school. George's love of
sports lead him to play college football and continued into a long career in coaching both
basketball and track, which included an amazing run to the MN state tournament with the small
school of St. Mary's in Bird Island, MN.
George grew up in southeast North Dakota starting school in Wahpeton and graduating from
Lidgerwood High School in 1960. After high school George moved to Minneapolis, MN where
he reacquainted himself with one of those classmates from Lidgerwood, who would soon
become his wife of 61 years, Bondell Kohoutek. George and Bonnie were married on August
17, 1963 in their hometown of Lidgerwood and started teaching careers that would take them to
four states over the next five decades.
George and Bonnie started in Valley City, ND where they both graduated from college with
degrees in education. Their love of education took them throughout the Midwest and into
Alaska: Bird Island, MN; Colstrip, MT; Lidgerwood, Scranton, Harvey, Bowman ND; Pilot
Station, Hooper Bay, Kiana, Kotzebue AK; and finally coming back to retire in Scranton. George
and Bonnie didn't slow down during retirement, spending winters in Arizona and traveling
around the country in various RV's while returning for summers with family and friends in
Scranton. Everywhere they went, George and Bonnie made wonderful friends and great
memories. Ever the storyteller, these adventures provided George with tales to tell to
whomever would listen; and some of them were actually true! He and Bonnie enjoyed their
adventures together for all these years.
Dad's love of cars originated during his time working in his father's dealership and was always a
conversation starter. All 4 of his kids logged hundreds of miles cruising car lots throughout the
state looking for 'opportunities'. There are too many cars to mention here, but he finished one
final deal in August 2024 securing his long-desired Corvette Convertible for a last cruise.
George was a one of a kind and will be greatly missed by his wife of 61 years, Bonnie, children
Julie (Rich) Murack, George "Bart" (Ilene) Brackin III, Neil (Kelly) Brackin and Lee (Aaron)
Pierce. Grandchildren Kellen (Victoria) Murack, Kyle Murack, Ryan Murack, Katie Murack,
Courtney Brackin, Mikayla Brackin, Zachary Brackin, Morgan Brackin, Riley Brackin, Jacob
Pierce and Samuel Pierce. One brother Bill (Susan) Brackin, one sister Kathy (Bruce) Coequyt;
Sister in-laws Sharon Loney, Paulette Brackin and Dina Brackin; Brother in-laws Patrick
Goolsbey, Dirk (Jane) Kohoutek and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George Sr. and Clarice, brothers John Brackin
and Jerry Brackin, sister Patricia Goolsbey; brother-in-law Lester Loney; niece Claire Bailey.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Scranton Public School.
