There will be a Family and Friends service on June 8th at 7:00 pm at the Bowman Methodist Church. Burial services will be performed at the Mandan Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE LIVE-STREAMED ON THE BOWMAN METHODIST FACEBOOK PAGE.
Gary was born in Holtville, CA to Ersel and May Campbell on August 9th, 1938. He spent his early years in Holtville. The family moved to Chula Vista, CA in 1942 right after the birth of his sister Sharon. The family moved briefly to Colorado, but returned back to Chula Vista. While in high school Gary joined the Naval Reserves and during his senior year he worked the night shift at Rohr Industries. In 1958 Gary received his high school diploma and draft notice on the same day. He served on the destroyer escort USS Wiseman patrolling off the coast of Vietnam.
While in high school Gary met Sonia Cook and they were joined in marriage on August 11, 1959. They had three children, Victoria Lynn (1960), Dennis Eugene (1962), David Wayne (1963). Dennis died right after birth. Gary and Sonia divorced in 1968. Gary moved to New Jersey where he met his second wife Joyce and they had a daughter, Michelle. In 1995 Gary and Joyce divorced. He worked as a manager at Burger King and then worked for M & M/Mars until his retirement with the company.
He retired from M & M/Mars and shortly afterwards connected again with his first wife Sonia.
Sonia was babysitting David & Shari's girls when Gary came to visit them. Sonia walked into their home in Hettinger and the first thing Gary said to her was "How are you young lady?". Her response was "I haven't been called that in years." They sat down together on the floor and assembled a rocking horse that Gary had brought for the grandkids. This chance meeting was the beginning of their second life together as Gary and Sonia re-married on August 7, 1998 at the Bowman Methodist Church.
Gary and Sonia were blessed to have 25 years of wonderful memories together. When Gary first moved to Bowman he didn't think he would fit in, because he didn't know anyone in town. However, it didn't take him long to make new friends, as Sonia always said, Gary didn't know when to stop talking.
He always treasured his friendship with Jim and LaVonne Lutz. Without them Gary and Sonia would never bought their RV and traveled to Alaska, Canada and Alabama for 10 years. Gary and Sonia loved to travel and had many adventures together all over the world.
He is now at peace after 2 years of being in Swing Bed at Southwest Healthcare Services after a stroke.
Gary was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the San Diego Chargers and Padres, Bowman Bulldogs and Dickinson Bluehawks.
Gary was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved to dote on them all.
He will be remembered as a very kind and loving man.
