She attended grade school at Cedar Creek and graduated from Reeder High School as valedictorian in 1933. She graduated from Jamestown College in 1937 with a BA degree, majoring in English and minoring in social studies and psychology.
She taught school in North Dakota at North Lemmon, Darling Springs, Adelaide, and Haynes.
On April 4, 1942, Frances married Kenneth Hedman in Miles City, MT. After Kenneth entered the Army Air Corp in May 1942, Fran accompanied him for short stints during his military duties in Glendale, CA, Tucson, AZ, and Camp McCoy, WI. While Kenneth was overseas in the military, Fran taught and was principal at Scranton High School. She so enjoyed her students – she coached girls' basketball, was the cheerleading advisor, and supervised other activities, including drama.
After the war, Fran and Ken made their home in Scranton. Fran and Ken were blessed with four children - Faye, Kaye, Aldon and Calvin. Fran was busy with her family and in later years she enjoyed visiting her children and their families.
Fran loved and was very active in her community and church. She was instrumental in promoting piano lessons and the school band program. She was active in park improvements, community programs and plays. She taught Sunday school and led Bible study for many years. She was a member of the Community Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Scranton Homemakers Club, and Golden Miners. For many years she wrote news for the Bowman County Pioneer and other newspapers and reported local news on KNDC radio in Hettinger. She was the editor for her church newsletter. She was also on the book committee for "Prairie Tales," a history of Bowman County and surrounding areas.
Fran loved family gatherings and social events, often taking many pictures that are now treasured memories.
