Born in Lefor on June 27, 1930 to Henry and Katharine (Grundhauser) Hollinger, Buck enjoyed the time spent helping at his Uncle Paul's farm. When the family moved to Dickinson, he discovered sports—a passion he retained his entire life. His greatest joy was watching his kids and grandkids compete.
Buck graduated from Dickinson High School in 1949, and attended DSC for 2 years before enlisting in the Air Force, where he served for 4 years. His military time was spent as a Staff Sergeant at air bases in Rapid City and the Philippines. After his honorable discharge, he returned to DSC, finishing his BS degree in Social Studies, PE, and Business. While there he continued his love of sports by playing basketball and football for the "Savages" "Blue Hawks".
He married the love of his life, Therese (Terry) Schmalz on August 27, 1956. They celebrated 61 years of marriage and raised 6 children.
Buck's first job took him to Glen Ullin, ND. He served as HS Principal, taught classes and coached football, basketball, and baseball. In his spare time, he enjoyed refereeing high school sports with his partner, Tony Engelhardt. He was also a dedicated member of the Elks and Lion's Clubs. He spent 3 summers earning his Masters in Education at Montana State. In 1967, he became the HS Superintendent until leaving Glen Ullin to become the superintendent of Beach High School in 1975. Because he wanted to work with younger kids, he finished his educational career in Bowman, ND, as Elementary Principal, from 1980 until his retirement in 1990.
He and Terry spent their retirement enjoying golf, watching local sports teams, and playing cards. They truly enjoyed being involved in the local church and community. The time they spent at Hawks Point in Dickinson was a highlight for Buck as he had the chance to reconnect with his friends from college, going for coffee, watching the Blue Hawks, and telling jokes.
Buck is survived by his wife, Terry (Bowman), and their 6 children: Lynn Brown (Jeff), Scranton, Mark Hollinger (Beth), Texas, Pamela Wilcox (Marvin), Oklahoma, Edward, Jr. (Laurie), Minnesota, Mary Pearson (Craig), California, and William (Cheryl), South Dakota; along with 3 sisters, Dorothy Kilwein, Betty Kuntz, and Mary Ebenhoeh. His 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren brought him immense pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Richard and Andy, and his sister, Marcella.
