Duane Steckler was born October 16, 1955 at Dickinson, ND, son of Wilbert
and Lorraine Schmidt Steckler. He attended school in Killdeer, ND; Amidon,
ND; Buffalo, SD: then moving with his parents to Bowman, ND where he
graduated from high school in 1973. He attended 2 years of college
at Dickinson State before beginning work at Skelly Truck Stop in Bowman.
He married Sandy Erickson June 16, 1978. Duane began working for the
Bowman Public School in 1979. He enjoyed the kids so much and was known to
play many practical jokes on them. A majority of the kids received
nicknames from him when they entered middle school and he referred to them
by nicknames long after they graduated. Teachers and school employees
became long time dear friends. In 2007 he went to work for Bowman
County until the time of his death. Duane was hard working who loved
his wife dearly. Their jobs created a distant relationship
during the week, but on weekends they enjoyed spending time with
each other, as well as, their friends and family. When the opportunity arose Sandy and Duane enjoyed traveling together.

Not everyone knew his real first name. "Steck", the "Dooman", or "Dewey"
is what he went by most of the time. Golfing, hunting, or anything
to socialize with friends was what he loved. He loved
spending time with his nieces and nephews to tease and spoil
them. Duane was the advocator of getting the family together once a
year. He enjoyed being the older brother that the
siblings looked up to. One of Duane's favorite hobbies was
coaching women's softball. He truly enjoyed the time on and off the
softball field with the girls. Duane was a piece of a puzzle that modeled
fun, love, and friendship.
