Gerald Duane "Bud" Hetland was born October 4, 1931, on his grandparents homestead in Vessey Township of Harding County South Dakota to Fritz and Edith Hetland. He was a small baby and often told the story of his grandma Hetland putting him in the oven to finish baking. His grandma also called him "her little buddy" which turned into his nickname of Bud. He attended the Vessey School, graduating from the 8th grade there. He deferred continuing his education to pursue farming and ranching with his parents. He received his GED in 1989.
Bud married Helen Peterson November 28, 1957 in Baker, MT. They began their life together on the farm southwest of Haley and had 3 children; Andy, Cheryl and Debbie. They moved from the farm in 1970 and lived in several communities in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana, where Bud worked as a mechanic. In 1994 they moved back to the farm to begin their retirement and moved to Bowman in 2003. Bud became a fixture at the Sunny Apartments and the nursing home while he devoted the next several years tending to Helen. He loved joking around with the staff and residents of the facility. He would often travel to the farm to help in any way he could and share the history of the area.

Bud is survived by his son Andy (Marilyn) Hetland, Haley, ND, daughters Cheryl (Cecil) Benner, Buffalo, WY and Debbie (Mike) Domagala, Hawthorne, NV;grandchildren Josh (Sam) Hetland, Melissa Benner, and Christine Domagala, and great-grandson Maverick Hetland; and brother Larry Hetland. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen, grandsons Matthew Hetland and Brian Benner and sister Carole Olson.
