He attended elementary school in a one room school house, Sheyenne District 14, skipping the 5th grade. He then attended Oak Grove High School in Fargo and graduated in 1958 from Argusville. After graduation he attended Wahpeton School of Science.

Dennis worked for the telephone company in Rugby, ND, for one year before heading to Denver for a career as a lineman. Working in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota and retiring in Idaho. After retirement, he drove a long-haul semi, hauling baby chicks from Idaho, into California and as far as Canada, a job he really enjoyed. As his health began to fail, he returned to Scranton, ND to be closer to family. Dennis had many hobbies over the years. He enjoyed camping with his family in Colorado and Montana, times that his children will always cherish. Dennis and his wife enjoyed square dancing while living in Billings, MT. He became interested in horses while living in Billings also, getting his children and himself involved in rodeos and trail rides. Hunting was always an important part of his life. When he could no longer hunt himself, he enjoyed watching it on TV. Fishing became very important to him while living in Idaho, making many good friends and fishing in tournaments. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, snow skiing and water skiing with his family and friends. Living in Idaho made him a big fan of Boise State, following them for many years. He enjoyed being involved in trap shooting, showing his corvettes in car shows and golfing. After retiring in Scranton, Dennis was very helpful on the farm of his daughter Kari and her husband Roger, driving truck and whatever else needed to be done on the farm.
