David was born in Bowman on May 11, 1939, the fourth child of Virgil West and Doris Stinchfield West. David graduated from Bowman High School in 1957. He served in the Army and attended the University of North Dakota and Dickinson State College.

David was five years old when his mother died. He was raised by the village, his father Virgil, Grandmother West, Grandmother Stinchfield, Dorothy and Chester West and other family members.

After working in Bowman for awhile, David and his brother Larry decided to move to Reno, Nevada for better job opportunities. David worked as cashier for Harold's Casino for many years, and then decided to return to Bowman. He bought his Uncle Merlin's house, the same house in which his Grandmother West lived.

David lived a very reclusive life, but ventured out to get the daily paper from his cousin Darrell. David's love of gardening and canning is evident by the many canned goods in his basement cupboards and his knowledge of food preparation will be passed on to future generations.

David was a very good dancer, avid reader, and could argue or discuss a wide range of topics with anyone. He like to sleep late and admonished anyone who called him too early in the day.

David was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and brothers Bruce and Larry
