Darrell L. Smith was born on June 10, 1943 in Bowman, ND, the son of Ray R. and Elsie M. (Johnson) Smith. He was raised on the Smith Ranch 9 miles east of Ludlow, SD. As a young boy, Darrell attended school at Norbeck . Darrell's father passed away when he was nine years old. He then became a big part of running the ranch. After completing the 8th grade, Darrell moved to Brookings, SD for a year while he attended Ag School. After Ag School, Darrell returned home to the ranch to help with its daily duties. He remained on the ranch his entire life.
Darrell was a very hard worker and was known to be the kind of man that could take on any job and become a Master of it. His rows were always straight, his expertise in a backhoe and his fine welding. No matter the job, Darrell did it right. During his life he helped several crews with shearing of the local sheep. He raised cows and sheep himself for several years and while at work, his faithful companion his dog Sam was usually with him. Darrell also had a talent that he passed on to his nieces and nephews; He knew how to pick the best chocolate chip cookie out of the whole bunch.
Darrell is survived by his sisters; Marian Giannonatti and June Smith both of Ludlow, SD, sister-in-law; Dixie Smith of Scranton, and brother-in-law; Bill Sarsland of Beach, ND, and also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Elsie, brothers; Rayford, Donnie, Jerald and Dell, sisters; Margaret Robinson and Barbara Sarsland and niece; Tammy Smith.
