Darrell was born on September 15th 1943 to Ray Lutes and Beatrice Hemmah Lutes at his Grandpa Virgil and Grandma Violet Lutes' sod homestead house which was located south of Bowman.
He always enjoyed working. At the age of 5 he helped his Grandpa Virgil plow fields with a team of horses. By the age of 8 he was milking cows and spending many hours on the tractor farming.
Darrell attended grade school at the Wilson school, which his Great Uncle Wilson had built. Later he attended one year of high school, but the love of outdoor life, working and farming with his father and grandfather held his interest more.
On January 18th, 1964 Darrell married Marlene Kaczmarek at Scranton ND. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage and had three sons, Jeff, Stacey and Jay. Darrell felt very blessed to have been able to farm with all three of his sons and their families. It was his favorite part of life. He also enjoyed visiting with friends, fishing, camping, feeding the local wildlife, raising peacocks and being an active member of the local Lions Club. Darrell had a perfect attendance record with the Lions of 32 years and really enjoyed the work they did for the community and the fellowship with his friends there.
After the diagnosis of cancer in September of 2005, Darrell was given such a short time left to live, but he endured the constant pain and struggles, being called a miracle by every doctor he encountered. The will to live and the love of family and farming is what gave him the strength and courage to go on. He will be missed by many.
