Darrel Nelson was born on July 16, 1940, the son of Earl and Emma Nelson, in Gascoyne, ND.  He attended Scranton High School and graduated in 1958.  He then moved to Rapid City, SD, where he married his wife, Lee.   They both ran a fostering/taking in elderly businesses.  They adopted their 2 children: Tammy and Greg.  After Lee passed away, the place was getting harder to run so Darrel sold his business and soon moved to California and lived with his daughter Tammy and her husband Scott.  After a year or so, Darrel moved back to the Black Hills.  In 2017 Darrel moved to Bowman and lived with his younger sister Darlene until his health took a turn and he had to move into the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Center in Bowman.  Darrel was a "Simple Man" and took life as it came.  He loved spending time with family, making lefsa during the holidays.  He enjoyed puzzles and even started framing them and selling them to friends while in the nursing home.

Darrel is survived by his son Greg Nelson, son in law Scott Junke, grandchildren Cody and Marcus, sister Darlene Nelson, Raymond (Mary) Nelson and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife Lee, daughter Tammy, parents Earl and Emma Nelson, brothers, Roger and Robert, sisters-in-law, Betty Nelson and Patricia Nelson, niece Amy Nelson and great niece Amanda Froistad.
