Constance Jean "Connie" Walter was born on March 16, 1915 in Bowman, North Dakota. She was the only daughter of Wallace and Anna (Thurow) Walter. Wallace operated the Rippe Grain and Milling Co. and the Bowman Flour Mill. She was raised in Bowman and graduated from Bowman High School in 1933. Following her graduation, she attended McAlester College in Minneapolis for two years. She returned to Bowman and worked for her Dad in the Mill and Elevator. When WWII broke out she took a job with the U.S. navy and moved to Bremerton Washington to work in an office at the Naval Shipyard. She had fond memories of those days and all the fun she had with her girlfriends from work. After the war, she returned to her job in Bowman, and helped care for her Mother Anna, who was undergoing cancer therapy in Miles City.
Connie and Ted Nygaard eloped to Minneapolis, and were married after Christmas in 1948. They had one son, Terry.
Connie was interested and an active supporter of many community organizations and events. She was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a lifelong member of Bowman Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid and auxiliary. She was a 30 year volunteer at the ARC Cedar Chest and had many wonderful memories of the volunteers she so enjoyed working with. She was an avid bowler and looked forward to her Thursday afternoon league.
She always had a smile and a "Hi" for anyone she might meet. Many people did not realize when they first met her that Connie was hard of hearing. She lost her hearing to a severe case of the mumps when she was 13, and she made up her mind to overcome her hearing loss by learning to read lips. Her ability was such that many people did not realize she was hard of hearing.
She is survived by her son Terry, daughter in Law Diane, and grandsons Eric and Clayton. Her nieces and nephew were also carried in her heart as her Family, and she loved them all as though they were her own. They are Oscar and Irene's children, Janet (Biel) David, Marie(King), Carol (Donley) and Martin and Emma's daughters Ellen(Haugrud) and Linda (Jamison)
