Christina Jean (Fischer) Steiner died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at 12:15 PM Saturday, August 13, 2022. Chris was born in Lafayette, IN to Hazel (Biggs) Fischer & Christ (Christy) Fischer on May 24, 1935.
Her family moved to the Black Hills near Rockerville where she & her sister, Letty & brother, David lived until the interstate moved them off their homestead. Christina worked at JC Penney where she met Rita Steiner who set her brother, Elmer up on a blind date with Chris. The rest, as they say, is history.
Elmer & Christina married in Rapid City, SD on April 2, 1956 in the original Cathedral building. Elmer & Chris raised five children – Greg & Cindy (Peterson), Nadine & Jim (Wanek), Melissa Case, Tracy & Elaine Sue (Wilson), Paul & Shelly (Senn). Her beloved grandchildren Justin, Samantha, Dan, Angie, Jarret, Caleb, Megan, Tyler, Zach & JT will miss her warm presence & loving spirit. Her 15 great grandchildren & numerous extended family members & her Surfside family will also mourn her joyous nature & her cooking skills, which was how she cared for others. You never left her home hungry.
Elmer & Chris; along with Ken & Sharon Steiner bought the Bowman Theater in 1972 & operated it until 2004. Chris loved the movies & seeing all the people coming to the movies made her very happy. Elmer & Chris had an extreme love of traveling, from Hawaii to Hilton Head to the Grand Canyon, they traveled wherever the fancy took them until they found a second family at Surfside Campground in Corpus Christi, TX where they returned for nearly 20 years making life-long friends. Chris won many chili cook-offs & soup contests in Texas where friends stood in line for her North Dakota caramel rolls & every pot luck included the query of which dish was hers.
Their love of traveling was something they never regretted spending money on, instilling in all their children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren a love of camping, campfires & all things adventurous.
Chris loved playing cards & games & was willing to learn any new game, but her favorite was Hand & Foot, Hundreds of games of Hand & Foot any excuse for a game, holidays, random Sundays, a blizzard.
Chris moved to the Black Hills with family after Elmer's death in 2017. She spent her last years at Edgewood Vista assisted living in Spearfish, SD.
Chris is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Elmer; granddaughter Sara (Greg & Cindy) & infant granddaughter Alexandra (Tracy & Elaine Sue); her sister Letty & brother David.
