Berk was born on October 29, 1946 in Baker, Montana. He was the fourth of five children born to Charles and Winona (Hale) Bowman, of Bowman, ND. He grew up in Miles City, Montana with four sisters: Beryl, DeeDee, Kay and Judy. When he was a teenager, the family moved to Bowman, ND where he graduated High School. It's rumored that he was the best looking football player to come through Bowman High.

Berk attended college at the University of North Dakota and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked in engineering only briefly until his dad needed help on the family farm. Berk returned to his roots in North Dakota. He began farming and ranching, which became his lifelong passion. When he wasn't farming and ranching, he worked as an auctioneer for Northwest Auction Company.

Although farming and ranching were his passion, Berk's real love was for his kids and grandkids. Berk and his first wife had a daughter, Dawn. He had four more children with his second wife, Randi. He and Randi raised their four children, Brett, Tara, Dani and Lindsey, in Bowman, ND. Berk spent the later years of his life split between Bowman and Billings, Montana.

Berk loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was up for any adventure if it meant he could be with his grandkids and see them smile. Watching the grandkids play their many sports was something he valued greatly. He loved life on the ranch and sharing that experience with loved ones. Providing home grown beef with family and friends was one way he showed people how much he cared for them. His collection of cowboy boots is impressive and will be a part of a family tradition for years to come. Berk was a loyal friend who looked forward to coffee time with his buddies. He could make small talk with anyone and he kept us all on our toes because we were never quite sure what he would say to complete strangers. He was wise, kind, generous, gentle, had the best personality, and always had a warm smile on his face. The rise of an eyebrow would oftentimes let you know exactly where he stood. Everyone that met Berk knew he was one of a kind.

Berk will be greatly missed by his son Brett (Ann) Bowman, daughters Tara (Patrick) Seitz, Dani (Jason) Huttner, Lindsey (Jeff) Guidinger, and Dawn (Joe) Aluise; grandchildren Charlie, Bowman, Bennett, Berkley, Beckham, Hallie, Max, Gus, Ehvinn, Ashlee and Carlee; sisters DeeDee Revelette, Kay (Ovid) Johnson, and Judy (Charlie) Epps, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Winona and Charles Bowman, sister Beryl Bennett, and grandson Carter Bowman.
