Art Eugene Hinkley was born in a soddie in the Grand River Township on December 21, 1920, the fourth child of Harry and Katie Delaney Hinkley. They came from Wisconsin to homestead in North Dakota. He attended Grand River Township country school and then attended Bowman High School until his help was needed to help run the farm. In 1946 Art moved to Bowman where he started working carpentry jobs with his older brother Clarence. In 1949 they began building the Methodist Church in Bowman. Art and Clarence also built the cabinets in the Catholic Church. Art never had any formal training, he just picked up a little here and a little there. When Art was looking for a year-round job, he purchased Bowman Glass. Art later sold Bowman Glass when he got into upholstering. In 1949, Art met Ruth Swanson at a wedding dance and on August 12, 1953 they were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Bowman. In 1970, Art began building their house where he really got to put his carpenter skills to the test. In 1974, Art became the maintenance man for the Hospital in Bowman. Ruth passed away on May 31, 2011.
Art enjoyed many things in his life from woodworking, baking bread, canning his own peaches to building guns, target shooting and reloading his own ammo. However most of all, Art enjoyed his time with Ruth. He would visit her every day after she moved into the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Center.
