Obituary

Arlene Rose Marie Korsmo, age 88, formerly of rural Reeder, ND (Ralph, SD),
returned to her Lord and Savior on December 13 th , 2022, following a short battle
with cancer. She passed away peacefully at West River Health Services in
Hettinger, ND.

Rose Marie was born on December 3 rd , 1934, the fourth of five children and only
daughter of Alfred and Marie (Siggerud) Haugrud of rural Barnesville, MN. She
grew up on the family dairy farm, attended Little Bethany Lutheran Church and
elementary school at District 19 Country School. Rose graduated from Barnesville
High School in 1952 and continued her education in Wahpeton, ND, where she
received her diploma in Licensed Practical Nursing.

In pursuit of adventure, Rose Marie and a nursing colleague accepted positions at
Community Memorial Hospital in Hettinger with the intention of living and
working in this small prairie town for only a couple of years. However, these plans
changed for Rose Marie when she met a local farmer/rancher, Willard Korsmo, at
Adolf's Gasthaus in Hettinger. Rose and Willard were married on June 11 th , 1960 in
Rothsay, MN, at Hamar Lutheran Church. Following their wedding, they lived in
Hettinger where Rose continued to work at the hospital, and Willard drove back
and forth to their farm near Ralph, SD. In 1971, they moved to the farm with their
three daughters, Lori, Juli and Lani. Rose spent the next years as a farm wife while
raising their children. As their girls grew, she returned to her nursing career
contributing to and touching the lives of many residents at Hillcrest Care Center.
Her years of service were recognized when she was honored with a 50-year service
award from the ND Board of Nursing. She retired to travel and spend time with
her family, following the many sports and activities of her grandchildren.

Rose Marie had many gifts and talents. She was an excellent cook and baker,
known for her delicious pies. She kept her heritage alive by teaching her girls the
art of making Norwegian delicacies and lefse. Rose's perfectionism was evident in
other interests she pursued through the years, including ceramics, sewing, cake
decorating, and refinishing or reupholstering furniture.

Rose Marie moved near Hettinger to live with her daughter, Lani and family in
2018, where she resided until her passing.

Rose is survived by her three daughters: Lori Korsmo of Lemmon, SD; Juli (Brian)
Johnson of Eads, TN; and Lani (Mitchell) Schultz of Hettinger, ND; and six
grandchildren: Victoria, Sarah, and Samuel Johnson and Elizabeth, Carolyn, and
Patrick Schultz; sisters-in-law: Arlene Haugrud of Elizabeth, MN; Katie Haugrud of
Underwood, MN; and Marion Haugrud of Barnesville, MN; and numerous nieces
and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Willard; her parents; and brothers: Arvid, DuVane, Harold, and Alfred "Fred" and
sister-in-law, Deloris Haugrud.

A private memorial service for Rose Marie will be held at a later date with burial
next to her husband at the Hettinger Cemetery.
