Alice Marie Hulm was born on August 6, 1914 in Hague, ND to Joseph and Anna (Lemer) Hulm, the oldest of 10 children. She grew up on a farm in a sod house northwest of Meadow, SD. She attended Meadow Central School through the 8th grade. She wasn't able to finish her school years because being the oldest she had to help take care of the farm. During her teen years, she taught herself how to play the guitar, which she enjoyed very much. She worked on the farm until she and her sister Angie rode the train to Helena, MT and found work as nannies. That is shere she met her fist husband Burton McKune. To this union she had two children, Annette and Burton Edward Jr. (Eddie). They lived in California when Burton Sr. passed away at an early age. Alice and her chidlren then moved back to the family farm near Meadow with her parents. She worked as a telephone operator in Lemmon, SD for years to support her family.
Alice came to Bowman, ND on day with another lady selling ads for the phone company. They stopped into Wokal Auto to sell Joseph Wokal an ad. He said he'd buy and ad if he could have Alice's phone number. They married on January 31, 1956 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman. To this union, Alice had three more children, Joseph Jr. (Joe), Cynthia (Cindy) and Robert (Bob).
Alice loved to garden and worked hard to keep the yard mowed and watered. She also worked hard taking care of her family and the house. She loved her coffee and Hersey's with almonds candy bars. Her children and grandchildren always made sure she never ran out of either on of them. She loved giving and receiving kisses from her grandchildren. She loved to hear the grandchildren singing "You Are My Sunshine." She loved to play and teach her grandkids how to play cards. She was an avid bowler. She was a member of the Tea Time Bowling team and won several trophies. She enjoyed the fun she had with her teammates. She had a unique way of releasing the ball and getting a strike. When she couldn't bowl anymore, she enjoyed watching it on T.V. She also loved to watch her favorite game show, "The Wheel of Fortune." "Honey" was her favorite endearment. Alice also enjoyed a good day of fishing in her younger years. Her Faith was very important to her. When she couldn't attend Mass anymore, she would watch it on T.V. or listen to it on the radio.
In 2005, Alice entered the SWHC Long Term Center where she received great care even at the hour of her death.
